The Leas Lift Folkestone

The Leas Lift is termed a 'water balanced cliff funicular'. It uses no electricity to power the cars but a rather ingenious method of weight transference, using water to fill a tank below the carriage at the top with water to create an inbalance. The descending car then pulls the other car up via a large eight foot pulley wheel and a well trained break operator to ensure a smooth journey of some 150 feet.
